Tax Relief Available for Individuals and Businesses Impacted by Severe Winter Weather

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency for ten Michigan counties affected by severe ice accumulation and widespread power outages beginning March 28, 2025. In response, the Michigan Department of Treasury is offering tax relief to individuals and businesses in Otsego, Oscoda, Montmorency, Presque Isle, Emmet, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Mackinac, and Alpena counties. Eligible taxpayers can request extensions for upcoming state tax filing and payment deadlines, including individual income tax (April 15), corporate income tax (April 30), and certain flow-through entities (March 31). Sales and use tax deadlines (April 20) are also included. This relief does not extend to federal or city income tax obligations.

Taxpayers must request relief by contacting Treasury via phone, mail, or e-services, providing their name, account number, and details on how the storm impacted them. Penalties and interest will be waived for approved requests. To learn more or submit a request, visit www.michigan.gov/taxes or call Treasury’s individual income tax line at 517-636-4486 and business tax line at 517-636-6925.
